Conservation Development

According to Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s Conservation Development Manual, conservation development is “a creative land use technique that allows a community to guide growth to the most appropriate areas within a parcel of land to avoid impacts to the environment and preserve the character-defining features of a community.” Conservation development incorporates flexibility in siting services and infrastructure and encourages the development of a greenway system within town. Additional aims include protection of natural resources, conservation of productive agricultural soils, and maintenance of open land set aside for recreation.  A minimum of fifty percent of the land in conservation development is generally preserved as meaningful open space.

This database is intended as a useful resource for town managers, planners, local governments, and interested citizens alike by providing links to existing ordinances in Rhode Island municipalities.  However, we do not distinguish between the quality of different ordinances, rather, our database serves as an information clearinghouse.  Therefore, we do not necessarily endorse the content and wording of every ordinance.
